Un design nord-américain pour une fabrication asiatique :
L'histoire du mythique trawler Grand Banks débute sur les bords d'une île de Hong Kong. Deux frères, John et Whit Newton, poussés par leur paternel, montent un chantier de construction de bateaux en bois sur un des parking de l'usine familiale.
Les premières unités produites sont des commandes d'entrepreneurs locaux aisés, désirant acquérir des voiliers à quille longue ou bien des motoryachts en bois.
En 1962, le chantier déménage pour intégrer des locaux plus grands afin de permettre de répondre à une demande grandissante. L'entreprise familiale s'installe à Junk Bay, au nord de l'archipel.
En 1963, les deux frères décident d'abandonner les demandes personnalisées et de se lancer dans la production de série. Ils demandent à l'architecte Kenneth Smith de leur dessiner un bateau de croisière de 36 pieds en bois, à carène à déplacement et en motorisation diesel.
A son lancement, le premier de la série est baptisé "Spray" et rencontre un franc succès. Inspiré du design des chalutiers nord-américains, le Spray préfigure la philosophie des Grand Banks : une timonerie surélevée, des pavois hauts et des lignes de coque toutes en rondeurs. L'ensemble apporte un incroyable volume habitable, tout en arborant une ligne qui sort de l'ordinaire. De plus, la carène à déplacement possède un très bon comportement dans la mer formée, même si elle souffre parfois d'un roulis prononcé.
1124 exemplaires de ce 36 pieds vont être fabriqués, préfigurant l'attrait du marché pour ce type d'unité. En 1974, le chantier développe son savoir-faire dans la fabrication en polyester. Plus facile à mettre en œuvre qu'une construction conventionnelle en bois, le chantier gagne en productivité.
Du fait de sa proximité avec les forêts asiatiques, le chantier développe un savoir-faire reconnu dans la mise en œuvre du teck pour ses ponts et ses emménagements intérieurs, offrant une ambiance marine incomparable dont la qualité ne s'est pas démenti au fil des années.

The story of the legendary Grand Banks trawler begins on the shores of an island in Hong Kong. Two brothers, John and Whit Newton, encouraged by their father, set up a wooden boat construction yard in one of the parking lots of the family factory.
The initial units produced were orders from wealthy local entrepreneurs, desiring to acquire long-keel sailboats or wooden motor yachts.
In 1962, the shipyard moved to larger premises to meet growing demand. The family business settled in Junk Bay, north of the archipelago.
In 1963, the two brothers decided to abandon custom orders and venture into serial production. They asked architect Kenneth Smith to design a 36-foot wooden cruise boat with a displacement hull and diesel propulsion.
At its launch, the first in the series was named "Spray" and was a resounding success. Inspired by the design of North American trawlers, the Spray foreshadowed the philosophy of the Grand Banks: a raised pilothouse, high bulwarks, and rounded hull lines. The combination provided incredible living space while sporting an extraordinary design. Additionally, the displacement hull behaved very well in rough seas, although it sometimes suffered from pronounced rolling.
1124 units of this 36-foot model would be manufactured, foreshadowing the market's attraction to this type of vessel. In 1974, the shipyard expanded its expertise into polyester manufacturing. Easier to work with than traditional wooden construction, the shipyard gained in productivity.
Due to its proximity to Asian forests, the shipyard developed renowned expertise in teak implementation for its decks and interior fittings, offering an incomparable maritime ambiance whose quality has remained unmatched over the years.
